In the world of photography, there seems to be a misunderstanding of what truly is a gimmick vs a real feature. A gimmick is something that ticks the marketing box but doesn't provide an aid in your photography, or an easier way to do something. Things like Film sims, image filters and such are under the gimmick category. Things like faster AF, higher FPS, Subject recognition which all help you capture an image are not gimmicks. Which brings me to the feature that no other brand has (sorry Canikonyfupanumpus shooters). Pentax Composition adjustment. If you shoot macro, this is fantastic since you don't need to move your tripod to fine tune your composition! So, if you're a macro shooter and don't have a Pentax camera, You should look into them as your dedicated Macro camera. It just does things that other brands just can't. But for a DSLR, is the PENTAX KP the ultimate Every Day Carry (EDC) camera? As such, how is it as a DSLR to just throw on a lens and head out to just explore? Now, I'm not talking about grabbing a super telephoto lens expecting to get shots of birds diving into the water to catch fish, or songbirds in full flight coming right at you. That's not what the KP was built to do. It's an intermediate camera originally slotted between the entry level K-70 and the Advanced/Prosumer K-3 II. As such, it has the same AF system as the K-3 but a small buffer and fps speed similar to the K-70. Image quality wise, the KP is fantastic as an every day carry camera (especially with a pancake lens attached, or a Limited lens). Yes, on a PENTAX Camera, you can shoot in JPEG and STILL save a RAW file. This is the least talked about PENTAX feature EVER: Saving a JPEG to RAW. No other brand has this ability. Why would you need to do this? There's a number of reasons. Say you've been shooting an event and had to use a custom white balance for fluorescent or tungsten lighting. You go out the next day to shoot some landscapes and your white balance is all off and you don't realize it until after you've taken a shot. The good news is you can get the RAW file so you're safe to edit all the errors of your ways to fix those mistakes! Coupled with the in camera raw editing feature, you could bypass the need for a software editor entirely! Okay fine, that's an exaggeration but, this is a powerful tool to use all within the camera itself. It's been around a long time too. In this video, I'm going to "deep dive" into showing what this is all about on the Pentax KP, K-3 and K-3 Mark III. Let's get started! The KP also has interval 4K shooting which the K-3 III does not. The K-3 allows for 4K shooting (4K 30p) which the KP does not. The audio preamp on the KP is very weak but the audio sound quality is very good. I'd say better than the K-3 III when using the built in microphones. The color science is totally different between the 2, even with the Flat profile, the KP is a much warmer tone than the K-3 III (K-3 III is more true to life). This was an interesting back to back comparison (at least for me). I was (and still am) shocked at how much slower the K-3 III video AF.C is compared to the KP. That was a huge surprise. No problem. Need help keeping your horizons straight? No problem at all. Innovation isn't just about AI subject recognition and ultra fast tracking of moving subjects. Studio shooters don't need that, astrophotography shooters don't need that either. But they could absolutely take advantage of these exclusive PENTAX features. They've been around for a long time and we take most of them for granted but, these features are not found in ANY other camera from ANY other brand. Horizon correction dates back to around at least 2010. Composition adjustment also dates back to at least 2010. Astrotracer, once again, at least 2010. So at the minimum, these exclusive features have been around for at least 15-16 years. The Canon R7 does seem to have horizon correction as well now, so, that's not exclusive anymore. THEN people freaked out and wanted it. It's funny how that works sometimes. Kind of sad at the same time that we don't what we have until it's gone. Anyway, how is shooting with the KP? It's actually very pleasant. Even with the D FA 150-450, it's surprisingly well balanced. Is it perfect? No, at least so far it's not. That may change as I shoot with it more and figure out all its quirks and best settings to use. The good: Compact size, light weight, image quality, amazingly sharp high iso ability, customizability (pretty much expected with a Pentax camera though). The not so good: AF.C hunts a lot, the buffer is way small (not a great dedicated camera for shooting action). FPS could be a tad quicker. Compact size (I can see how over extended shooting times it may start to feel a bit uncomfortable). Super short battery life without the Battery grip. That's what I'm going to answer in this video. Side by side, real time transfer speed of both jpg and raw DNG, the cards used, the cameras used, which cards were in which camera... All of it. This video will put this whole thing to rest. (I may stop using the KP for video, it's pretty soft looking, I'll see what that's all about). If you have a Windows computer, this video is my gift to you, showing you how to set up tethering for your Pentax K1, Pentax K1 Mark II, Pentax KP, Pentax K-3 Mark III, and K3 III monochrome cameras via USB. We'll go through a simple, four-step process to create the necessary files on your desktop for proper image sync. This engineering guide ensures you can connect your camera and optimize your camera settings for a smoother workflow. Here's the link to the Image Transmitter updater (which you'll need to run the software AFTER you've created the 2 folders and 2 files). https://www.ricoh-imaging.co.jp/english/products/imagetransmitter2/ WINDOWS USERS (Instructions for Mac users below): Create 2 folders inside C:/Programs (x86). The first folder will be named PENTAX and inside the PENTAX folder you'll create the 2nd folder called IMAGE TRANSMITTER 2. Now open Notepad and go to File, Save as, and name the file IMAGETransmitter2 and save it to your desktop. Do File Save as again and name this one ITViewer and save it to your desktop again. They will both save as .txt files so you'll have to change .txt to .exe. Right click one of the files you created and replace .txt with .exe and do the same for the other file. Say Yes/Ok/Continue to any prompts that pop up. Copy the file (right click and select COPY) and go to your C:\Programs (x86)\PENTAX\IMAGE TRANSMITTER 2 folder you created earlier and in the blank area, right click and PASTE the file into that folder. Do this for both files you created. Inside your IMAGE TRANSMITTER 2 folder, you should now have 2 files: IMAGETransmitter2.exe and ITViewer.exe. Install the Image Transmitter 2 update from the Ricoh website (link provided above). Let the installer run and once it completes, click on the Image Transmitter 2 desktop icon and select "Properties" then "Compatibility" and click "run as administrator". Now grab your camera and a USB cable, make sure you have USB settings in the camera set to MTP or PTP (depending on your model). Plug the USB cable into both the camera and computer (obviously), turn the camera on and the computer should recognize it. Open Image Transmitter 2 and away you go! *NOTE: If you don't set the LV in the software, you won't see anything in the display but you can still take photos and focus etc, they will show up in the folder location shown at the top left of the software). Mac INSTRUCTIONS: You can download the Image Transmitter 2 updater at any time, just don't run it yet. Create the Folders: Go to your Applications folder and create a new folder named PENTAX. Inside that, create another folder named IMAGE Transmitter 2. Create Dummy Files: Open TextEdit, save a blank file as IMAGETransmitter2.app (make sure to use the .app extension), and save a second blank file as ITViewer.app. Placing the Files: Move both dummy .app files into the Applications/PENTAX/IMAGE Transmitter 2/ folder. Run Updater: Run the latest Macintosh Updater from the Ricoh website. The installer should now bypass the "old version not found" error and perform a full installation. Troubleshooting Tips. Gatekeeper: If the installer won't open, Right-click the .pkg file and select Open to bypass macOS security blocks. Lightroom Plugin: If you use Lightroom, ensure the plugin is placed in /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom/Modules. Now grab your camera and a USB cable, make sure you have USB settings in the camera set to MTP or PTP (depending on your model). Plug the USB cable into both the camera and computer (obviously), turn the camera on and the computer should recognize it. Don't delete any poorly taken photos you've shot, if they can't be saved now, just give it some time and there'll be a way. These were photos I took back in 2015 and I was really upset when I got home and I went to load the images onto my computer when all I could get were thumbnails. So basically, the photos were useless. I just went through some of them using AI and had them resized and "fixed" to preserve the detail from the enlargement. For my tech peeps and nerds, the original images were 120 pixels by 160 pixels. I had AI enlarge them to around 1536 x 1024 (I can now use software i have to enlarge again from there to the full original size as shot (4928x3264). Ai didn't get everything right (why are my eyes SO BIG?!) But, it can do a lot to save old photos you thought were toss aways.
